How Tableau Metadata is used?

Tableau facilitates in capturing the metadata details of the sources like columns and their data types. Metadata is used to create dimensions, measures and the fields are calculated. Some of the properties of the metadata can be changed.

How to check the Metadata?

Once the data source is connected, Tableau presents all possible tables and columns present in the source, for instance, the source Sample Coffee shop is considered for checking the metadata. Click the Data menu and choose to connect to a data source. Browse for the MS access file named Sample - Coffee shop. Drag the table named Product to the data canvas. On choosing the file the below screen appears which shows the column names, their Data types. The String data types are shown as Abc and Numeric data types are shown as:


How to change the data type in Tableau?

The datatype of some of the fields can be changed if required. Depending on the nature of source data, sometimes Tableau may fail to recognize the data type from the source. In such scenario the data type can be edited manually. The screen below shows the option.

How to rename and hide the columns in Tableau?

The renaming option is used to change the names of the column. Also a column can be hidden so that it does not appear in the data view created. These options are available by clicking on the data type icon in the meta data grid as shown below

How to assign an Alias to a column in Tableau?

Each column of the data source can be assigned an alias which helps better understand the nature of the column. Choose the aliases option from the above step and the following screen comes up which is used to create or edit aliases.
