What is computer hardware? How many types of hardware are there?

Hardware generally represents the physical components of a computer, i.e. the components that can be seen and touched. They are used for technical purposes.

Examples of Hardware are the following −

  • Input devices − keyboard, mouse, etc.
  • Output devices − printer, monitor, etc.
  • Secondary storage devices − Hard disk, CD, DVD, etc.
  • Internal components − CPU, motherboard, RAM, etc.

Relationship between Hardware and Software

  • Hardware and software are mutually depend on each other. Hardware deals with technical part and software deals with programming part. Hence, both of them should work together in order to produce a useful output from the computer.
  • Utilization of software cannot be done without supporting hardware.
  • You cannot access a set of programs without hardware to operate upon and is useless.
  • To perform a specific task done on the computer, required software should be loaded into the hardware.
  • Hardware is a one-time expense.
  • Software development is highly expensive and is a continuing expense.
  • Different software applications can be loaded on hardware to perform different jobs.
  • A software acts as an connecting link between the user and the hardware.
  • If the hardware is the 'heart' of a computer system, then the software is considered as its 'soul'. Both are complementary, interrelated to each other.
