Salesforce.com is Microsoft’s Real Concern Cloud Computing

While O’Brien spoke of competition between Microsoft and Amazon in his interview with Network World , it appears that Microsoft is more concerned about Salesforce.com as a competitor, and with the announcement of Force.com and the alliance with Google,
probably rightly so. In fact, Microsoft sued Salesforce.com in Washington for patent infringement in May 2010 over a variety of back-end and user interface features, ranging from one covering a “system and method for providing and displaying a Web page having an embedded menu” to another that covers a “method and system for stacking toolbars in a computer display” About a month later, Salesforce.com sued Microsoft in Delaware for infringement patent of its patents, hiring David Boies, who defeated Microsoft ten years earlier in the U. S. Justice Department’s landmark antitrust case against them.

Salesforce.com’s CEO Marc Benioff responded to the Microsoft lawsuit by saying, “I guess you know you’ve made it in software when Microsoft is protesting your event. Or maybe when they’ve sued you. This is the greatest thing that’s ever happened in my career.”
