Job Description:

This is a highly sought after regional Legal Counsel role with a global corporation which drives the innovation lifecycle around the world, enabling the discovery, development, and delivery of the worlds greatest innovations Reporting to the Head of Legal (based in the UK), the Legal Counsel, APAC will be based in Beijing and will form part of a highly respected global legal team, with team members located in the US, London and Bangalore

Duties and responsibilities

Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of agreements with customers, vendors, partners, content providers, agents, distributors, resellers and other third parties, including data licenses, software and intellectual property licenses, and other complex commercial agreements Review RFPs for government customers, identify legal issues and help prepare proposals (including licensing agreements) Provide legal advice on mergers and acquisitions in the APAC region Act as key legal adviser for China and Japan, and other APAC countries as needed Research and respond to general legal inquiries from in-house clients that relate to matters like local regulatory issues, partnerships, content and software licensing, litigation, privacy, intellectual property, real estate and corporate and compliance matters Lead initiatives designed to streamline contract forms and processes Work collaboratively with business counterparts to identify opportunities for efficiencies and help implement changes Help develop the Legal Teams knowledge management resources (collaboration space, precedents, contract automation initiatives, etc) Participate in compliance initiatives through training and communications Participate in management teams, helping to issue spot and achieve strategic objectives Brief external counsel as required Identify ongoing personal training and developmental needs as part of continuous career and professional development Occasional travel on an as needed basis

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Legal qualification minimum 5 years post qualification general corporate/commercial legal experience, with a background in contractual negotiation and drafting (preferably obtained doing legal work for an intellectual property licensor or a provider of technology products/services to business or government customers) In-house experience a strong plus International experience and/or time spent at a multi-national corporation preferred Experience with government procurement processes very helpful Strong negotiation and drafting skills Attention to detail is critical and customer-centricity is a must Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and change direction or priorities on short notice Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines Exposure to cross-border transactions Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word Highly proficient in spoken and written English Other language skills a very strong plus (especially Mandarin and Japanese) Demonstrated ability to interact with and influence senior executive leaders
