Job Description:

Key accountabilities

Demonstrate a deep understanding of liquid chromatography and other separation science principles and be able to couple these with knowledge of aromatics technology to efficiently solve customer problems
Independently communicate with clients to develop work plans and determine the appropriate analysis methods to provide solutions
Solve problems using a variety of techniques LC, LC-MS, GC, IC, UV-Vis
Maintain awareness of current and developing petrochemical technology including catalyst design, process stream composition and impurities, alternate feeds, and end product specifications to augment problem solving efforts
Understand chromatography capabilities that are available internally and externally
Prepare samples and skillfully operate lab equipment to resolve and analyze components of liquid streams
Interpret results and apply judgment to modify sample preparation and analytical approach
Maintain instruments and laboratory infrastructure in a team environment Analyze and solve instrument and equipment problems independently or in collaboration with vendor service engineers
Organize work and time to manage multiple project responsibilities and clients Adapt to and perform under changing priorities and deadlines
Communicate findings to clients verbally and through written technical documentation
Independently develop and write test methods and operating, maintenance and safety procedures
Demonstrate an understanding of internal and external customer needs and exceed their expectations
Work closely with others to coordinate work plans and ensure best practices
Actively promote safe behaviors and practices within the Research & Technology community, site and business unit by modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening as needed
Other responsibilities include communicating laboratory capabilities to the technical community and management and understanding analytical capabilities that reside elsewhere within BP or externally Independently manage and set direction of work, manage multiple priorities and clients, and promptly support customer billing

Essential Education BS or higher degree in related science or engineering field

Essential experience and job requirements

Extensive (>5 years) demonstrated experience applying and developing LC and related methods to the analysis of hydrocarbons and/or petrochemicals
A sound knowledge of chemistry and chromatography principles is required
Proven ability in independent interpretation of results and resultant decision-making
Basic computer skills with the ability to master sophisticated analysis software systems on multiple hardware platforms is required
Ability to perform a variety of dry and wet chemical operations (eg weighing, filtering, neutralizing, ) safely, accurately and consistently
Ability to travel internationally

Desirable criteria & qualifications

An advanced degree (PhD) in Chemistry is preferred
At least 5 years of industrial analytical hands on experience (beyond the highest degree level) is preferred
Familiarity with EZChrom (or similar chromatography software) and LIMS is preferred
A working understanding of advanced chromatography techniques such as LC-MS is strongly preferred
