XPath Overview - XPath

What is XPath Overview?

Before learning XPath, we need to first recognize XSL which stands for Extensible Stylesheet Language. it is just like XML as CSS is to HTML.

Need for XSL

In case of HTML files, tags are predefined including table, div, span, etc. The browser knows a way to add style to them and show them using CSS styles. but in case of XML documents, tags are not predefined. so that you can recognize and style an XML report, world wide web Consortium (W3C) advanced XSL that can act as an XML-based Stylesheet Language. An XSL file specifies how a browser need to render an XML report.

Following are the main parts of XSL −

  • XSLT − used to convert XML files into numerous other kinds of document.
  • XPath − used to navigate XML documents.
  • XSL-FO − used to format XML documents.

  • Path Expressions − XPath presents powerful route expressions choose nodes or list of nodes in XML files.
  • Standard Functions − XPath presents a rich library of preferred functions for manipulation of string values, numeric values, date and time comparison, node and QName manipulation, series manipulation, Boolean values etc.
  • Major Part of XSLT − XPath is one of the primary elements in XSLT wellknown and is need to have information in order to work with XSLT files.
  • W3C Recommendation − XPath is an respectable advice of world wide web Consortium (W3C).

One need to keep the following points in mind, even as working with XPath −
