What is meant by WordPress - User Roles

In this chapter you will learn about the various roles the users can play in WordPress. As a rule, every user has well defined functions in WordPress. Every user can access the site, only in a way for which the WordPress admin has given permission.

Few pre-defined WordPress roles are discussed below −

  • Administrator – WordPress has given full authority to this role. The Administrator can enjoy all the rights. An Admin in WordPress site can conduct all sorts of activities like creating new admins, inviting various other users and removing them according to his wish.
  • Editor − The Editor of a WordPress site also has a lot of flexibility. He or she can access all the posts and pages, including comments, categories, tags, and links too. They are also eligible to create, publish, edit or delete a post or a page.
  • Author − The Author of a WordPress site only has the permission to write posts. He is also able to upload pictures, in addition to editing and publishing his own posts.
  • Contributor − The Contributor of a WordPress site can only write and edit the posts before they are published. They have the right to create their own posts and pages also but has no permission to publish them. He cannot upload images or files but can see your site's status. When they want to publish any post, it must be first notified personally to the administrator for review. When the post is approved, the contributor cannot make any changes once published.
  • Follower − The Follower of a WordPress site has the one and only permission to read the posts and make comments on them. Followers can also sign in to your account in respect of receiving updates.
  • Viewer − Viewers of WordPress site can only check the posts and also has the right to make comments on various posts.
