Closing the Transfer Gap - Training and Development

Holton and Baldwin (in press) introduced a new concept in the transfer literature called transfer distance. Figure below below illustrates this new concept. At the far left (step 1), you can see the basic type of learning—acquiring knowledge. At the far right , you see the maximum level of transfer, called far transfer. Far transfer occurs when an employee applies new learning not only to the immediate task the training was designed for but generalizes the learning to new or different tasks. Near transfer occurs when an employee applies the learning only to the immediate tasks focused upon in training. In between these two ends of the process are intermediate steps.
