What is the Data Extract feature of Tableau?

The Tableau Data extraction feature facilitates in creating a data subset from the data source. It enables to apply filters and increase the performance. It also facilitates in applying some features to Tableau data like identifying the data distinct values. To create a extract to be stored in local drive such that it can be accessed by Tableau, the Data Extract feature is used.

How an Extract is created in a Tableau?

Data of the extraction is done by following the menu Data -> Extract Data. It creates many options like applying limits to how many rows to be extracted and whether to aggregate data for dimensions. The below screen shows the Extract Data option.

How to apply Extract Filters?

Filters are created to extract a subset of data from the data source which will return only the relevant rows. For instance, the Sample superstore data set and an extract is created. In the filter option the list is selected and select the checkbox value for which the data is pulled from the source.

How to add New Data to Extract in Tableau?

To add more data for a already created extract choose the option Data -> Extract -> Append From File. In this case browse the file containing the data and click OK to finish. The number and datatype of columns in the file should be in sync with existing data.

How to extract History in Tableau?

The history of the data extracts like the number of times the extract has happened and at what times can be verified by using the menu Data -> Extract -> History.
