Techniques For Assessing The Environment Introduction - Strategic Management

In this chapter, we will have a look at the external environment to methods of practical application. It explores the setting up of a strategic information unit, and describes several ways in which external issues may be systematically examined, leading to strategic decisions. The aim is to move from a simple listing of opportunities and threats to a more fundamental understanding of how an organisation can determine what is really important to it, and there after think deeply about the issues.

Here our aim is to explore ways to help determine what the critical environmental issues are for a particular organisation, and some ways of dealing with uncertainty. En route to these issues we should also give some thought to the setting up of a strategic information unit within the organisation.
