Planning through a committee - Strategic Management

Committees and other forums for group meetings may often be used to great advantage in a company’s planning processes. What I personally believe is impossible, and a contributory factor to planning failure, is the use of committees to replace a corporate planner. Any group with the special title ‘planning committee’ tends to be a danger sign Where the committee is the only organ the company has of creating and coordinating planning, the risk of failure rises to a very high level indeed.

By all means create forums for the involvement and participation of managers in planning, and develop these as a key element of the company’s approach to corporate planning. But these should always be a tool of the planning system, not the method by which planning is introduced. In any case, it is generally a good rule to have as few committees as possible.
