Challenging the assumptions - Strategic Management

It is extremely unlikely that personal computers and machine tools can be viewed solely in a UK context. Both are global businesses and have global competitors. Therefore, in the long term it is unlikely that either can survive by thinking only in UK terms. A more likely positioning is indicated by the arrows on the matrix in Figure. On a world basis, machine tools might be seen as slightly more attractive in prospects, but the competitive positioning would shrink to the poor box.

Acquisition might be a possibility, but theissue is to build a world position in a few products, rather than to own a diversity of products none of which have a world position. Someone would have to work very hard to persuade me that a viable world strategy is even possible.
