Installation Using Package Manager

On most of the GNU/Linux distributions, SED is available by default. Which command is used to identify whether it is present on your system or not. If it is not identified, install SED on Debian based GNU/Linux using apt package manager as follows:

Installation from Source Code

As GNU SED is a part of GNU project , source code is available for free to download.The installation of SED using package manager is already seen. Now, the installation of SED from its source code is shown.

  • From an authentic place , download the source code. The command line utility wget serves this purpose.

  • Decompress and extract the downloaded source code.

  • Change into the directory and run configure.

  • After the successful completion, the configure generates Makefile. To compile the source code, issue a make command.

  • The test suite is now run to ensure the build is clean. This is an optional step.

  • To install the SED utility, make sure you have superuser privileges.

Finally , SED is successfully compiled and installed. It can be verified by executing the sed command as follows:
