Stock Placement Using Storage Unit Types - SAP WM

The Warehouse Management (WM) system allows you to use a number of different storage unit types when you transfer and store materials in the warehouse. For example, you can transfer materials on pallets of various sizes, such as European pallets or industrial pallets. Crates or pallets of materials that must be stored in different locations because of height or weight limits can be stored without unnecessary loss of space.

How are Storage Unit Types Used?
In order to use storage unit types you can

  • Define storage unit types in the material master record
  • Enter a storage unit type on the initial screen to create a transfer order without an originating document
  • Enter a storage unit type on the preparation screen for a transfer order

When creating transfer orders, if you enter the storage unit type on either the initial screen or the preparation screen, the system uses the value you enter instead of the storage unit type in the material master record, if one is available. If you do not enter a storage type on the initial screen and you go to the preparation screen, the system uses the storage unit type defined in the material master record. If you do not enter a storage type on the initial screen and you go to the item screen, the system does not propose a storage unit type, even if one has been defined in the material master. You must enter the storage unit type and then choose ENTER before the system will propose a storage type and bin.

Entering Palletization Data When Posting Goods Receipts
You can enter palletization data in IM when posting goods receipts. Depending upon the movement type, a dialog box appears for each line item. The system proposes palletization data from the material master record in this box. You can change the data in the dialog box if necessary. The palletization data is transferred to the transfer requirements and is, subsequently, taken into account when transfer orders are generated. We recommend that you use this new functionality, particularly in conjunction with automatic transfer order creation.

You activate this function for each movement type using the Customizing application. See the section on setting up automatic transfer order creation under Activities Transfers in the Warehouse Management IMG documentation. This function is only useful when activated for goods receipt postings in which transfer requirements are created.

Example: Using Storage Unit Types
For the following example, which demonstrates palletization for a putaway, the situation is as follows: Material O2 can be delivered on European pallets (storage unit type EP) or on industrial pallets (storage unit type IP). Each industrial pallet holds 40 canisters; a European pallet holds 20 canisters. This information has been entered in the material master record for the material.

You receive a delivery of 200 canisters of the material O2. After the goods receipt has been posted in IM and a transfer requirement has been created, you want to transfer the material from the goods receipt interim storage area into the warehouse.

  1. Use one of the tasks to display transfer requirements (for example, display transfer requirements for the specific material).
  2. From the list of transfer requirements that are displayed, select the transfer requirement from which you want to create a transfer order.
  3. In the palletization section of the preparation screen for the transfer order the system automatically proposes 5 industrial pallets each containing 40 canisters, based on the storage unit type defined in the material master record, as shown below:
  4. Palletization

  5. If you choose to continue the process in the foreground, you go to the item screen where the system proposes storage bins that are in storage area 004 (bulk storage). When the system has assigned the 5 pallets to storage bins, it returns to the preparation screen. From this screen you choose Transfer order Post to post the transfer order to the database.
