What are the components of power electronics?

Power Electronics is the process which controls the current and voltage flow and converts them to a form which is suitable for user loads. Power electronic system whose efficiency and reliability is 100% are the most desirable systems.

Below diagram displays the components of a Power Electronic system and the way they are interlinked.


Power electronic system will convert electrical energy from one form to another and makes sure that below points are achieved

  • Maximum efficiency
  • Maximum reliability
  • Maximum availability
  • Minimum cost
  • Least weight
  • Small size

Power Electronics Applications will be classified into two types − Static Applications and Drive Applications.

Static Applications

Static applications make use of moving and/or rotating mechanical parts like welding, heating, cooling, and electro-plating and DC power.

DC Power Supply


Drive Applications

Drive applications will be having rotating parts like motors and the examples of those will include compressors, pumps, conveyer belts and air conditioning systems.

Air Conditioning System

Power electronics are widely used in air conditioners for controlling the elements like compressors. Below is a schematic diagram which shows how power electronics are used in air conditioners.
