Oracle interMedia is now called Oracle Multimedia.Oracle Data base 11g continues to develop advancements to Oracle Multimedia.In today’s increasing demand for higher-fidelity digitalization, Oracle bridges the technology with the database and supports the requirements in security, media, and entertainment,medical,and life sciences.

With the lower cost in storage and higher technological advancementcustomers are storing more and larger digital images,audio,and video in the database.Now,the information technology is entering an era where single media files can be tens of gigabytes in size.

Oracle welcomes this challenge by providing rich features in Oracle Multimedia.Prior to the Oracle Database 11g release,the ORDIMAGE, ORDAUDIO, ORDVIDEO, and ORDDOC data types were bound to the 4GB size restriction.As of Oracle Multimedia,these datatypes can hold objects from 8TB to 128 TB depending on the database block size.

Enhanced DICOM Support

Oracle Multimedia continues to enhance functionality for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM),which is a medical imaging standard initiated by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Electrical Manufacturers
Association(NEMA) to enhance the connectivity of radiological devices.

In 1993, the ACR-NEMA standard was revised and renamed as DICOM (Version 3.0).Since then, the DICOM standard has become the dominant standard for radiology imaging and communication. Oracle Multimedia recognizes stand-alone DICOM objects and extracts embedded attributes relating to patient, study,and series.Oracle Multimedia stores DICOM format data in databasetables with columns of the ORDDICOM type.

Oracle Multimedia stores DICOM format data in database tables with columns of the ORDDICOM type.The ORDDICOM datatype is new to Oracle Database 11g and natively supports DICOM content produced by medical devices.Let’s create a table that can house the ORDDICOM datatype:

The ORDDICOM object datatype stores the DICOM content and the extractedmetadata.The set Properties method tells Oracle Multimedia to parse the DICOM data and extract DICOM metadata into ORDDICOM object attributes.

Image Processing

Using Oracle Multimedia,database users can perform image-processing functions that change image content.For example,you can scale and crop an image or convert it to a different file format.This level of processing requires interpreting pixel values of images.This can consume system performance and memory.

Another area of improvement is in the scale-down operations that provide the mechanism for fast generation of thumbnail images from very large source images (JPEG,TIFF, and DICOM with JPEG or RAW encoding).

Support for SecureFiles

Oracle Multimedia fully supports the next generation of LOBs,Secure Files.Secure Files complements the multimedia object types with the new performance improvements. Multimedia object types, methods,and packages are certified to work transparently with Oracle SecureFiles.

Note Oracle recommends using SecureFiles to store Oracle Multimedia object types.You can reap the performance benefits of Oracle’s reengineered BLOB implementation.

Additional Multimedia Enhancements

Oracle Multimedia 11g adds the following medical imaging format support for DICOM:

  • DICOM object creation capability
  • DICOM object conformance validation enhancement
  • DICOM metadata extraction enhancements
  • The ability to make DICOM objects anonymous for security
