Enterprise Manager New Features - Oracle 11g

There are several changes in Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Manager Data base Control regarding database administration tasks. We’ll show you the main new features in Enterprise Manager in this section.

In Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g,you had only three main tabs on the data base home page:Performance,Administration, and Maintenance. In OracleEnterprise Manager 11g,you have the following tabs:

  • Performance:The customizable Performance tab lets you view session perfor mance details as well as memory, disk, and CPU utilization.
  • Availability:This tab helps you manage backup and recovery, including Oracle Secure Backup.
  • Server:This tab helps you manage storage, configuration, security, the query optimizer, the Oracle Scheduler, and the Resource Manager.
  • Schema:This tab lets you manage database objects and perform change management.
  • Data Movement: This tab covers Data Pump export and import, Streams, and advanced replication.
  • Software and Support:This tab helps you manage software configuration and patching, the Deployment Procedure Manager, and Real Application Testing.

In the following sections,we outline some of the key new features in Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g.

The Availability Tab

You can perform back and recovery tasks, including using Oracle Secure Back up, from the Availability tab.The Availability tab has two major sections, Backup/Recovery and Oracle Secure Backup. The Backup/Recovery section has two sections, Setup and Manage.Click the View and Manage Transactions link in the Manage section to access the LogMiner tool. The LogMiner tool lets you browse transactions by time or an SCN range. You can query results by record or transaction basis.

The LogMiner tool is integrated with the Oracle Database 11g flas hback transaction feature.Log Miner shows all dependent transactions, and it can undo an entire transaction, including its dependent transactions.

The Server Tab

The Server tab includes sections such as Storage, Data base Configuration (initialization para meters),Security, Oracle Scheduler, Statistics Management and Resource Manager. You’ll find the Oracle Scheduler on the Server tab.A new addition to the Oracle Scheduler links is the Automated Maintenance Tasks tab, which lets you enable, disable, and configure the three automated maintenance tasks in Oracle Database 11g: Optimizer Statistics Gathering, Segment Advisor, and Automatic SQL Tuning. This shows the Automated Maintenance Tasks page.

The Automated Maintenance Tasks page

Automated Maintenance Tasks page

Notice that there are three automatic maintenance tasks that are scheduled through the Oracle Scheduler, instead of two tasks in Oracle Database 10g.The automatic maintenance task framework manages important maintenance tasks such as Automatic SQL Tuning, SegmentAdvisor, and Optimizer Statistics Gathering. The Optimizer Statistics Gat hering job,of course, collects optimizer statistics on various database objects during the daily maintenance window. The Segment Advisor,as in the older release, shows the amount of unused space you can reclaim from various segments.By having key maintenance tasks as part of a framework, you can exert control over their scheduling and resource usage.

The new automatic maintenance task introduced in this release is the Auto matic SQL Tuning Advisor task, which identifies ways to improve the execution plans for high-load SQL statements

New Related Links

In Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g,you have a set of new links in the Related Links section of the home page. Here’s a summary of the important new links.

Policy Groups Link

The Policy Groups link lets you manage all policy groups defined in your database. You’ll have predefined policy groups such as Secure Configuration for Oracle Database and Secure Confi guration for Oracle Listener. The Secure Configuration for Oracle policy group ensures that your database is following best-practice security configuration settings in order to make the database secure. The Policy Groups page has three tabs leading to the following pages:

  • Policy Group Evaluation Results page: Summarizes how the targets are adhering to the standards of the policy group.
  • Policy Group Library page:Shows all the policy groups available in you
  • The Secure Configuration for Oracle Database page

Secure Configuration for Oracle Database page

  • Policy Group Evaluation Errors page: Shows any errors that occurred during the evaluation of the targets.

Scheduler Central

The Scheduler Central page lets you monitor and manage three types of jobs:

  • Jobs that you scheduled through the Oracle Scheduler.
  • Jobs being managed by the Enterprise Manager.
  • The three automated maintenance tasks (Optimizer Statistics Gathering, Segment Advisor, and Automatic SQL Tuning task) that run automatically for database maintenance.

Baseline Metric Thresholds

The Baseline Metric Thre sholds page has two tabs:Metric Analysis and Threshold Configuration. The Metric Analysis tab lets you identify the metrics that have a bearing on recent problems in the database.Once you find out which metrics are strongly correl ated with recent data base problems, you can then set thresholds for those metrics using the Thres hold Configuration tab.The Threshold Configuration tab lets you view the current configuration of baseline metric thresholds and also edit those threshold settings. You can also invoke the Advanced Metric Analysis tab from here in order to test the threshold levels for various metrics.

SQL Worksheet

The iSQL*Plus interface has been removed in Oracle Database 11g.Instead, you have the new SQL Worksheet to execute SQL statements.

Advisor Central

You can access all database advisors, including the new SQL Performance Ana lyzer and the Data Recovery Advisor, by clicking the Advisor Central link. You can run an advisor, change the default parameters for the advisor, and rev iew the results of the advisor from the Advisor Central page.

Metric and Policy Settings

The Metric and Policy Settings page has two tabs: Metric Thresholds and Policies.Use the Metric Thresholds page to specify metric settings for a monitored target. The Polices tab takes you to a table that allows you to add and customize polices for a specific target. For example, you can select a policy rule that checks whether the default temporary tablespace has been set to the system tablespace.

LogMiner Support

LogMiner is a familiar Oracle tool which can directly access the redo logs to help you locate the changes made and roll back user errors or a logical corruption of data,in addition to helping you perform audit functions. You can use LogMiner through the SQL*Plus command-line interface. In prior versions, the only GUI to LogMiner was through the installation of a stand alone Java console especially for the Log Miner tool.

In Oracle Database 11g, you don’t have to perform this instal lation, since you can now access LogMiner directly through Enterp rise Manager Data base Control. We’ll briefly review how you can use the new Database Controlinterface to the LogMiner tool.

Earlier in this chapter, you learned about the new flash back transaction feature. The Log Miner tool is integrated fully with the flash back transaction feature and lets you view a transaction along with all of its dependent trans actions.

To use the Log Miner tool, you must first enable supplemental logging in the database,as shown here:

Once you have enabled supplemental logging in the database, you’re ready to use the Log Miner tool to search the redo logs for transactions. To access LogMiner through the Database Control interface, use the following steps.

  1. From the Database home page, click the Availability tab.
  2. In the Manage section on the Availability tab, click the View and Manage Transactions link.

Database Diagnostic Pack and Tuning Pack

As in Oracle Database 10g,you require separate Oracle licensing to use the premium functionality embedded in the OEM Database Control (and Grid Control). You can use the Management Pack Access page to control access to the premium packs,as shown in Figure

The Management Pack Access page in Database Control

Figure shows the Management Pack Access page in Database Control. You can use this page to enable or disable access to each of the premium packs that require additional Oracle licenses in the Oracle Database 11g release.

The Database Diagnostic Pack and the Database Tuning Pack are essentially identical to their counterparts in Oracle Database 10g.The diagnostic pack provides the diagnostic tools ADDM, AWR, and so on.The Tuning Pack provides access to tuning advisors such as the SQL Tuning Advisor and the SQL Access Advisor. To enable or disable the Database Diagnostic Pack and the Database Tuning Pack, set the new initialization parameter control_management_pack_access. This parameter can take the following three values:

  • none
  • diagnostic
  • diagnostic+tuning

For example, to enable access to both the diagnostic pack and the tuning pack, you must use the following setting for the control_management_pack_access parameter:

control_management_pack_access = diagnostic+tuning

By default, you have access to both the diagnostic and tuning packs. The control_ management_pack_access parameter is dynamic.
