Explain in detail about the leadership concept of knowledge management

The direction for the knowledge management is being set by the knowledge leader or the head of the knowledge management. The knowledge leader drives forward the knowledge management.

There are many different approaches for knowledge management. All the methods are mutually exclusive and no one particular method can be said to be better than other methods. The different approaches are -

  • The Contingency approach
  • The Behaviour approach
  • The Transformational approach
  • The Transactional approach
  • The Trait approach

The Contingency Approach

The basic underlying assumption of this approach is that there cannot be any one universal approach or a single best practice for solving the distinct problems. According to this approach, different solutions for different situations need to be continuously and constantly identified and hence this approach is known as creative approach.

In order to achieve the given goals, the best and appropriate knowledge management approach has to be recognized on the basis of flexibility and appropriateness of knowledge management approaches.

The Cultural / Behaviour Approach

The behaviour or the cultural approach basically comes from the change management and re-engineering of the business process. Knowledge is being considered as an issue of management. According to this approach, technology is important but not the only thing that is required for managing the knowledge. Unlike other approaches which concentrate on creation of knowledge, this approach concentrates on innovation, creativity and learning.

Through networks and interactions among people and the groups, knowledge is being distributed and shared. For instance, the different teams and organizations that mainly focuses on accessing the intelligence resources.

The Transformational Approach

The perception of the employees with respect to organizational human capital is being affected by the transformational leadership approach. The benefits are added to the process of knowledge management, interpersonal communication among the employees is being encouraged and organizational culture is created and thus enhances the benefits of the organization.

The level of the organisational innovation is being improved by the transformational leadership and a participative environment and culture is being created and the culture of the organization is made to support sharing and managing of the organization knowledge, either directly or indirectly.

Transformational Leadership

The transformation approach enables the employees to obtain autonomy in sharing their experiences. Transformational leaders are more innovative that the transactional leaders.

The Transactional Approach

The concept of reward and punishment is the underlying concept behind the transactional approach. According to this approach, there are two factors, on which the performance of the employees are dependent.

Transactional leadership

In many a situation, encouragement enables the workers to put more efforts and the bonus would be always in monetary terms. This approach mainly concentrates on the physical and the security requirements in the situations where the employees fail to achieve the targets.

The Trait Approach

The trait approach is the outcome of the study of both the characteristics of successful and unsuccessful leaders. Then the success or the failure of the leaders is ascertained by comparing the traits of the potential leaders with that they have listed out.

The traits of the leaders who are successful are superior to those traits of the less effective leaders. The essential traits of the successful leaders are being identified by the trait approach to ascertain the effectiveness of the potential leader. But they seem to be only predictions and does not ensure about the success of the leader.
