The whole idea of a cover letter is for convincing an employer to know more about you and check your resume. It has same importance that of your resume.

What is Cover Letter?

In general, Cover Letter is an introductory remark that generally accompanies the resume which catches the recruiter’s notice. CV will make you stand out from others and fascinate the employer to call you for an interview.

Features of a Cover Letter

Salient features of a cover letter are below −

  • Personalized – This is to address a specific person in your letter. In case, if you don’t know whom to address, then do some research about the organization/company and find the right person.
  • Relevant – Gather the information properly and co-relate your experience and qualification with the company’s work and vision. Before applying for the job understand the role very well.

  • Persuasive – Present yourself how you acquired skills, experience and qualification distinctively eligible you for the job. Also explain why and how you fit in the job role and assure how you are beneficial for the company.
  • Brief and Precise – Keep it brief and clear limiting your CV to one page roughly about 300-350 words. Ensure you maintain the professional pitch in your language.
  • Reviewed – Proofread the CV twice or thrice and as minor error can spoil your efforts. Make sure it is free from spelling errors and grammar mistakes.

Elements of a cover letter

  • The Heading − It consists the return address and date.
  • The Inside Address – Person name followed by name and address of the company.

  • Salutation/Greeting − Preferably, address by a particular name. Not to use the first name instead use the last name. For example, if the name is George Headson, then address like Dear Mr. Headson.

  • The Body – Start the body with the position/role you are applying for and by what means you came to know about it. Then describe yourself including qualification, education, experience and other skills. To add more, write the relevancy of your expertise and company’s requirements.

  • Closing Paragraph – Your availability for a personal interview should be informed. Thank the addressee for her/his time and consideration and close your letter.
