On the end to end aspects of service management, the best practice guidelines are provided by a framework, known as ITIL. The framework covers complete range of the 4Ps that is people, processes, product and partners. The companies which provide IT service to the customers usually practice ITIL framework.

Any organization can implement the ITIL framework as the processes, tasks and checklists of ITIL are not specific to any organization. The organization is facilitated with a framework to plan, implement and measure the IT services.

ITIL was first developed in UK on behalf of Communications and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA), and is presently included within the Office of Government Commerce (OGC).

Why ITIL is required?

ITIL framework facilitates an organization in gaining the customer confidence and satisfaction by providing most effective ways of service delivery to the business and IT managers. In some of the areas ITIL framework plays an important role such as:

What are the different versions of ITIL Framework?

Initially ITIL framework originated as a collection of books including the IT service management aspects. Many changes have been undergone as per the requirement and lead to some of the versions like:

  • The initial version is ITIL V1, which consists of 31 books
  • Later ITIL VI was revised and 7 books were replaced and hence ITIL V2. Thousands of organizations globally has accepted this version and is now in practice by many organizations.
  • The third version was modified in 2007 by consolidating 5 more crucial books that cover the lifecycle of the service and thus resulted in ITIL V3 which includes 26 processes and 4 functions.
  • In 2011, the 2011 edition of V3 was published. It was an updated version released in 2007.
