What is Web Browser?

Web Browser is a software application that allows us to see and investigate the information on the web. User can search for any web page by entering a URL into address bar.

It is the web browser responsibility to show text, audio, video, animation and many more by interpreting text and commands contained in web page.

Previously, the web browsers were text-based while today, they are graphical-based or voice-based. Below are the web browsers commonly available.

Several web browsers are available in the market today. All of them implement depending on their capabilities and structure. The most basic component that all web browsers must exhibit are listed below

  • Controller/Dispatcher
  • Interpreter
  • Client Programs

Controller works similar to control unit as in CPU. Based on the input it receives from mouse, keyboard, it interprets it and make other services to work.

Interpreter gets the information from the controller and executes line by line. These are optional but not all. Java interpreter is optional while HTML interpreter program is mandatory.

The Client Program explains the protocol that is used to access a specific service. Below are the list of client programs which are used in general:

  • HTTP
  • SMTP
  • FTP
  • NNTP
  • POP

Starting Internet Explorer

Microsoft developed the Internet Explorer and is installed by default with windows operating system. However, it can be downloaded and be upgraded.

  • To begin internet explorer, follow the below steps:
  • Go to the Start button and click on Internet Explorer

  • The Internet Explorer window will appear as shown in the following diagram:

Accessing Web Page

Accessing web page is very simple. Just enter the URL in the address bar as shown the following diagram:

A web page may contain hyperlinks. When we click on these links other web page is opened. These hyperlinks can be in form of text or image. When we take the mouse over an hyperlink, pointer change its shape to hand.

Key Points

Click on back button, if you want to see the previous web page.

A new web page can be opened in the same tab or different tab or in a new window.

Saving Webpage

  • A web page can be saved for future use. To save a web page, follow the steps below:
  • Click File > Save As. Save Webpage dialog box appears.
  • Choose the file location where the file can be saved from save in: list box and select the folder to save.
  • Mention the file name in the File name box here.

Select the type from type list drop down.

  • Webpage, complete
  • Web Archive
  • Webpage HTML only
  • Text File

Choose the character set used in your webpage from the encoding list box. Western European is the default.

Click save button and the webpage is saved.

Saving Web Elements

  • Web elements are the links, pictures and more. Follow the steps below to save these elements.
  • Select the webpage element and right click to save. Menu options are shown and it varies on the type of element you want to save.

Save Picture As: This option will save the picture at the location specified.


  • Favourites option will save the addresses of the webpages you visited. No need to memorize the long and complex address of websites.
  • To open the web page, just double click the webpage which you have marked as bookmark.


To add a website to your favorite list, follow the below steps:

  • Open the web page in the browser.
  • Click on the favorite menu and click Add to Favorites option. A dialog will appear.
  • You can also click Favourites button available in the toolbar. Favourites panel will open in the left corner of the internet explorer window. Click add button, AddFavourites dialog box will apppear

  • In AddFavourites dialog box, the Name: text box will contains the name of the web page that you want to add to favourites.
  • Click on the Create in button and the Favourites folder will appear. Move the web page to the folder where you want to move.
  • Click on OK button to save it to the favourites


To open favourites, follow the steps below:

  • Click on the address to open that site by taking the mouse in the Favorite Panel.

  • It can also be opened from the Favorites menu by selecting the right one.

Favourites can be organized in order to find the web page we wish to see. Create a folder for each category and store the webpages into them. Follow the steps below to organize favourites:

  • Click on Favourites menu > Organize Favourites. Organize favourites dialog box will appear.
  • Drag the web page to the respective folder and it stores in it. To delete a favourite, click on Delete button.
