What is Internet of Things (IoT)?

The recent advances in the software, modern attitudes towards technology and the fall in the hardware prices are exploited by IoT. With respect to delivery of goods, products and services, major changes along with the impact (social, economic and political) of these changes are incorporated by the new and advanced elements of IoT.

The key features of IoT include artificial intelligence, connectivity, sensors, active engagement, and small device use. They are as follows:

  • AI – every aspect of life is enhanced by the power of data collection, artificial intelligence algorithms and networks.
  • Connectivity – Networks are no longer tied with major providers only. Still being practical, they can exist on smaller and cheaper scale. These small networks between the system devices are created by IoT.
  • Sensors – The distinction is lost without sensors by IoT. The sensors transform a standard passive network of devices into an active system equipped with real-time integration by Sensors acting as defining instruments.
  • Active Engagement – A new paradigm for active engagement of content, product or service is introduced by IoT.
  • Small Devices − Devices, as predicted, have become smaller, cheaper, and more powerful over time. IoT exploits purpose-built small devices to deliver its precision, scalability, and versatility.

What are the advantages of IoT?

The advantages associated with IoT are as follows:

  • Improved Customer Engagement – IoT brings complete transformation for achieving richer and effective engagements with the audience.
  • Technology Optimization – The IoT technology that improves the customer experience also facilitates in improving the device use, and more potent improvements in technology. A world of critical functional and field data is unlocked by IoT.
  • Reduced Waste – Real world information is provided by IoT thus facilitating an effective resource management.
  • Enhanced Data Collection – An accurate picture of everything is provided by IoT. Data collection these days suffer from the design and passive usage limitations. These spaces are breaked out by IoT and are placed exactly as humans required.

What are the disadvantages of IoT?

Along with impressive set of benefits, significant set of challenges is also provided by IoT. Some of them are:

  • Security – The constantly connected devices communicate over the networks and thus an ecosystem is created. Despite of many security measures, little control is offered by the system thus leading the users exposed to different attackers.
  • Privacy – Without the active participation of the user, personal data is provided by IoT in extreme detail.
  • Complexity – In terms of design, deployment and maintenance IoT systems are complicated offering use of multiple technologies and new enabling technologies.
  • Flexibility – The conflicting or the locked systems makes the users concern about the flexibility of the IoT system to integrate with other systems.
  • Compliance – Compliance of regulations is required for IoT like any other technology. The compliance seems to be challenging when considering the standard software compliance as a battle.
