As we have mentioned, recovery must be considered during all stages of system development. This is necessary because the plan of recovery can affect the design of an application system and its use of resources. Special processing may need to be included in the application programs to provide the necessary recovery. The use of recovery techniques may place additional strain on system resources, such as direct access storage or the virtual storage used by CICS. The effect of recovery on system performance must be considered.

One of the important design considerations for an application is how recovery processing will be performed. As just discussed, CICS can provide automatic recovery of the recoverable resources modified by a recoverable transaction. Application systems can also create their own recovery procedures using CICS facilities. Often both methods are used in combination to provide a complete recovery approach.
