A representation of one screen format is called a map. A group of maps, which are link-edited together, is called a mapset. Each mapset must be registered in PPT, because BMS mapset is nothing but a program coded in Assembler. A mapset name consists of two parts Viz. A generic name (1 to 7 characters) and a Suffix (1 character). Application programs use only the generic name. The suffix is required at the mapset definition time in order to distinguish the device types if the same mapset is used for different types of terminals. The application program can use the generic name while CICS will automatically insert the suffix depending upon the terminal in use thus ensuring the device independence.
