Design documentation - IBM Mainframe

Programming and design specifications are the basis for coding your application program. The data descriptions in your program match the data described in the specifications. The logic of your program matches the logic set forth in the design documentation. Furthermore, the order in which you code the parts of your program will follow the 'top-down' hierarchy established at the design stage.

Each of the four divisions in a COBOL program has a specific logical function to perform when solving your data processing problems. The Identification Division is required; the other three Divisions (Environment, Data, and Procedure) are optional.

The example below illustrates the use of the only required division header of a COBOL program and the minimum statements required for a program that will compile without errors (though it won't actually do anything).
