TrackBack was first released as an open specification in 2002. It was released as a protocol and feature of Movable Type version 2.2 and has since been adopted by many other blogging applications.
The methodology behind trackbacks. Site A posts an article that is interesting to Site B. Site B references the article on Site A and uses a trackback to let Site A know about the reference. Site B also uses trackbacks to alert other sites that may be interested in the topic—whether the interest is in the original article or the reference.
