GSM Billing - GSM

What is GSM Billing?

GSM service providers perform billing based on the services they are providing to their customers and all the parameters are easy enough for charging a customer for the provided services.

This chapter will give you an overview of the commonly used billing techniques and parameters applied to charge a GSM subscriber.

Telephony Service

These services will be charged based on per call basis and the call initiator should pay the charges. Anyways incoming calls are not chargeable these days. A customer will be charged based on different parameters like:

  • International call or long distance call.
  • Local call.
  • Call made during peak hours.
  • Call made during night time.
  • Discounted call during weekends.
  • Call per minute or per second.
  • Several other criteria can be designed by a service provider to charge their customers.

SMS Service

Most of the service providers charge SMS services depending on the number of text messages sent a customer sends. Some other prime SMS services are available, where the service providers charge more than normal SMS charge. These services will be benefited in collaboration of Television Networks or Radio Networks to demand SMS from the audiences.

Most of the times, charges will be paid by the SMS sender, but for some services such as stocks and share prices, mobile banking facilities, and leisure booking services, etc. the recipient of the SMS will pay for the service.

GPRS Services

GPRS service can be used to browse, play games on the Internet and download movies. Therefore, service provider will charge you depending on the data you upload and data downloaded on your mobile phone. These charges are based on per Kilo Byte data downloaded/uploaded.

Additional parameter can be a QoS provided to you. If you wish to watch a movie, then a low QoS can work as some data loss is acceptable, but when you are downloading a zip file, then a single byte loss can corrupt your complete downloaded file.

Another parameter is peak and off peak time for downloading a data file or for browsing the Internet.

Supplementary Services

Most of the supplementary services will be provided based on monthly rental or absolutely free. For example, call waiting, call forwarding, calling number identification, and call on hold are available at zero cost.

Call barring is a service used by service providers to recover their dues, etc., else this service will not be used by any subscriber.

Call conferencing service is like a simple telephone call where the customers will be charged for multiple calls made at a time. None of the service provider will charge extra for this service.

Closed User Group (CUG) is very popular and is mainly used for giving special discounts to the users if they are making calls to a specific defined group of subscribers.

Advice of Charge (AoC) can be charged based on number of queries made by a subscriber.
