The concept, creation, and maintenance of database shadows are discussed in detail in Chapter Creating and Maintaining a Database. gfix has utilities for operating shadows.
Activating a Shadow
The switch for activating a shadow when a database dies is –ac[tivate]. The syntax is
gfix -ac <path-to-first-shadow-volume>Suppose the shadow’s first volume, employee.sh1, is in a directory /opt/dbshadows. You would activate it with this command:
./gfix -ac /opt/dbshadows/employee.sh1Dropping Unavailable Shadows
The switch for dropping unavailable shadows is –k[ill]. The syntax is
gfix -k[ill] db_nameTo kill unavailable shadows for employee.fdb:
./gfix -k /opt/firebird/examples/employee.fdb
