Date Functions - File Maker

Date functions either produce dates or extract information from dates.

Date(month, day, year)

Value Returned: date.
Returns the date with the specified month, day, and year:

DateToText(date)

Value Returned: text.
Returns a text string for the specified date. The format of the date depends on the date formats in effect when the database was created. This function might be useful when you need text within a letter that includes date information from the database:

Day(date)

Value Returned: number.
Returns the day of the month of the date passed to it:

DayName(date)

Value Returned: text.
Returns a text string that is the name of the day of the week for the date specified:

DayofWeek(date)

Value Returned: number.
Returns a number of the day of the week for the date specified. The number given counts from Sunday beginning at 1:

DayofYear(date)

Value Returned: number.
Returns a number of the day of the year for the date specified:

Month(date)

Value Returned: number.
Returns a number of the month of the date specified:
Month( TextToDate( "10/3/2001" ) )
RESULT: 10

MonthName(date)

Value Returned: text.
Returns the name of the month of the date specified:

Today

Value Returned: date.
Returns today’s date as specified by the computer’s calendar:

This is a function that you should never, ever, use. It is included in FileMaker only for backward compatibility with older systems that didn’t have Status functions.

The reason is that the Today function evaluates only when the database is opened, not when the function is referenced. If you have older databases that use the Today function and you’ve already accounted for this fact (perhaps by writing scripts that close the database and open it automatically every day), then you can keep it. But when you need what the Today function provides, use the Status( CurrentDate ) function instead. You can create calculations using Status( CurrentDate ) that evaluate whenever they are needed instead of only when the database opens.

WeekofYear(date)

Value Returned: number.
Returns the week of the year for the date specified:

WeekofYearFiscal(date, starting day)

Value Returned: number.
Returns the week of the fiscal year beginning on starting day for the date specified. The starting day is a number between 1 and 7 that specifies which day of the week the fiscal year begins on. The first week of a fiscal year is defined to be a week that has the day specified and contains four or more days of that year.

For instance, if the starting day is set to 1 for Sunday, then January 1 of that year must fall on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday for that week to be the first week of the fiscal year.

Year(date)

Value Returned: number.
Returns the year of the date specified:
