What is Evolution of Etiquette Introduction?

Etiquettes create a positive impression in the minds of people when followed properly. They make a person to behave professional and respond to situations in the most appropriate manner possible.

The word “etiquette” came from the old French term estiquette which means “ticket, label” where they practice carrying cards that has instructions on how to maintain proper behavior in courts. Later on, the high class people started using this method.

Earlier, invitation cards used to have the date and timing of the party. Now, they are including additional information such as different courses, roadmap, where to park their carriages etc. A set of instructions were written on the entrance doors of public houses on what conduct they expect from their visitors.

Due to vowel-corruption, the word changed from estiquette to etiquette. The word is not limited to the cards anymore and a few standards that were followed in rich and elite households had become part of everyday life and “etiquette” slowly changed to term “prescribed behavior”.

Etiquette vs. Manners vs. Courtesy

Usually they are used in conversations interchangeably and in general people tend to do mistakes while using the words “etiquette”, “manners”, and “courtesy”. Let us see what they actually mean -


Courtesy is defined as the act of being kind or polite and doing right thing at the given time. For example, offering one’s seat to a lady passenger was considered as a courtesy. Now as the time advances, the modern day example would be keeping the door of the lift open for a colleague to walk inside the lift as courteous behavior.


People are expected to stick to certain code of conduct in different social circles is called Etiquette. They are given equal importance to written rules even though they are not written out. They leave a good impression in people’s mind.


It is a neutral word which itself means only “actions”. To give them a direction, we use the words “good, bad” before them. If you get irritated by someone, you angrily ask him “Don’t you have any manners!” and he replied “Yes”, he could actually be right.

Depending on one’s upbringing, education, environment, he could have either good or bad manners. In short words, etiquette is what how we should behave and manners are how we do it ultimately.
