What is Digital Modulation Techniques?

We will discuss the Digital-to-Analog signal conversion in this chapter. These techniques are called as Digital Modulation techniques.

Digital Modulation techniques are greatly used as they provide more information capacity, high data security, quicker system availability with great quality communication. They have the capacity to convey huge amounts of data than the general analog modulation techniques.

Let us discuss the prominent modulation techniques.

ASK – Amplitude Shift Keying

The amplitude of the output depends on the input data if it should be at zero level or a mixture of positive and negative, based on carrier frequency.

FSK – Frequency Shift Keying

Depending on the input data applied, the frequency of the output signal will be either high or low.

PSK – Phase Shift Keying

Depending on the input, the phase of the output signal shifts. There are two types, Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), as per the phase shifts. One more is Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) which changes the phase as per to the previous value.

M-ary Encoding

More than two bits are transmitted at the same time using M-ary encoding techniques which helps in the reducing the bandwidth.

The types of M-ary techniques are −

  • M-ary ASK
  • M-ary FSK
  • M-ary PSK
