What is cPanel Socket Security Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS)?

cPanel Socket Security Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) facilitates in data encryption – transferring the data from the host or server to the computer and transferring from computer to host or server.

How to generate cPanel SSL/TLS Private Key?

Private key facilitated in decoding the data which is sent by the visitor’s device. Sever cannot decode the data sent by the user without the private key, which is generated while generating a CSR automatically by cPanel.

cPanel Private key can be generated by:

Step 1 – Click on SSL/TLS from the cPanel Security section.

Step 2 – In the interface, Select Generate, view, upload or delete your private keys

Step 3 – To generate a private key, New Private Key interface is used.

Step 4 – Select the Key Size and enter description or leave blank as it is optional.

Step 5 – Click Generate and a new private key is generated.

How to upload cPanel SSL/TLS Private Key?

The private Key which is generated is uploaded to the server by pasting the existing generated key in the text box and enter description or leave blank as it is optional. Click Save and the private key is imported.

In case of a ‘.key’ existing file, choose .key by scrolling down the ‘Upload a New Private Key’ interface. Browse the file, select, and Click Upload and the key is imported to server.

How to generate cPanel Certificate Signing Request (CSR)?

Certificate Signing Request (CSR) is a certificate which provides the desired additional information to buy a SSL certificate from CA authorities. cPanel CSR cab be generated by:

Step 1 – Click SSL/TLS in the cPanel Security section.

Step 2 – Click Generate, View or delete SSL certificate signing requests.

Step 3 – Scroll down and identify the Generate a New Certificate Signing Request (CSR)

Step 4 - Select the private key, among the existing or generate a new private key

Step 5 – Provide the domain desired to generate CSR. Wild card domain can be selected as a subdomain by entering *

Step 6 – Enter other details like city, State, Country, Company etc.

Step 7 – Click Generate and CSR is generated.

How to upload a cPanel SSL/TLS Certificate?

cPanel SSL/TLS can be uploaded to the server only when it is certified by a Trusted Certificate provider. cPanel SSL/TLS certificate can be uploaded by:

Step 1 – Click SSL/TLS from cPanel Security section.

Step 2 - Click Generate, view, upload or delete SSL certificates, under ‘Certificates (CRT)’

Step 3 – Identify the Upload a New certificate interface by scrolling down and paste the SSL/TLS code. Click Save Certificate or upload the .crt file provided by the provider and click Upload Certificate

Can a cPanel Self-Signed Certificate be used?

Self-signed certificate can be used but for the visitors of the website an error message appears stating that certificate is not from a trusted provider. Always buy SSL/TLS certificate.

Self-signed Certificate can be generated by:

Step 1 – under Certificates section, identify Generate a New Certificate option by scrolling down.

Step 2 – Select the key from the dropdown or select to generate a new private key.

Step 3 - Provide the domain desired to generate CSR. Wild card domain can be selected as a subdomain by entering *

Step 4– Enter other details like city, State, Country, Company etc.

How to Install a cPanel SSL?

Upload the SSL/TLS Certificate obtained from a trusted provider in order to use on the website. cPanel SSL/TLS can be uploaded by:

Step 1 – Click SSL/TLS from the cPanel Security Section

Step 2 – Click Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS) from ‘Certificates (CRT)’

Step 3 – select Install an SSL website by scrolling down the interface.

Step 4 – Click Browse Certificate and select certificate among the installed certificate. Select the domain and Click Autofill

Step 5 – Other fields like Private key Certificate Authority bundle are filled by cPanel

Step 6 – Click Install Certificate and for domain and subdomain the certificate is activated
