Legal Structures Introduction - Business Environment

Business organisations can be classified in a variety of ways, including:

  1. size (e.g. small, medium, large);
  2. type of industry (e.g. primary, secondary, tertiary);
  3. sector (e.g. private sector, public sector); and
  4. legal status (e.g. sole trader, partnership, and so on).

These classifications help to distinguish one type of organisation from another and to focus attention on the implications of such differences for an individual enterprise. In the discussion below, business organisations are examined as legal structures and the consequences of variations in legal status are discussed in some detail.
