Many champions and championships have amusing and comic nicknames. They not only add enjoyment, but are also form a big part of the game and grab the media attention very much.

Many groups won Basketball events at the Olympics, but due to the widespread likeness of the game and championships conducted by NBA, very few amateur participants are as famous as the NBA players. It has become very traditional for a good champion of any nation to join NBA and participate in their championships.

Some of the popular basketball champions are listed below.

Bob Cousy


Bob Cousy is considered as the finest player in ball-handling guards. He was nicknamed as ‘Houdini of the Hardwood’ and is an American professional basketball player. He used to be a member of the American professional basketball team of Boston, Boston Celtics during the period of 1950-1963. He was also trained at the Boston College during 1963 to 69.

Bill Russell


He was regarded as the first African American basketball figure who contributed for Boston Celtics. He was participated in Olympic Games 1956 that was organized in Melbourne and won gold for United States. He usually participated in NBA championships, held in the period between 1957-1969 which was termed as ‘The Russell era’.

Wilt Chamberlain


He was popularly called as goal scoring machine during 60’s and behaves as a powerful opponent of Bill Russell and was said to be a follower of coach, Phog Allen, Chamberlain. He did not have any fouls in any NBA matches he had participated. He was nicknamed as ‘The Big Dipper’ and was also affectionately called as ‘Wilt the Stilt’, ‘Goalith’.


Earvin Johnson. Jr, more famous as Magic Johnson, is an American Basketball player. He used to be a member of Los Angeles Lakers team and treated as a team leader to five NBA championships. He also used to please the audience with his innovative ball handling techniques.

Larry Bird


Bird, popularly known as ‘Hick from French Lick’, was a participant for 13 seasons represented from the NBA team Boston Celtics and is a fine shooter. He used to be a member of the US men’s basketball team, the Dream Team, that achieved an Olympic gold at Barcelona in 1992.

Michael Jordan


Michael Jordon, nickname is Air Jordan, is famous for his outstanding spectacular gymnastic feats to leap at high range. He was internationally regarded as the best basketball player of all time. His performance in shooting, passing, and also defending the ball was great. He assisted the US Olympic team to achieve the gold medals at Barcelona and Spain in 1984 and 1992.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar


Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was born to Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor. Jr, was regarded as the most famous American professional Basketball player during the years 1970’s and 80’s. He used to be a member of Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers teams of the NBA. He is also a famous actor and writer.

Shaquille O'Neal


Shaquille O'Neal, briefly called Shaq, was an active participant for different NBA teams, Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. He represented as one of the participant for the US Basketball team that has achieved gold at Olympics in 1996.

John Stockton


John was a member of the NBA team Utah Jazz and though he was not as tall as other counterparts, he was very good at holding the ball and at steals that he was treated as the most famous point guard in the NBA history. John was a participant of the US Olympics basketball team in 1992 and in 1996 and also achieved two gold medals.

LeBron James


James, famously known as King James, deserves the title Ohio’s Mr. Basketball. He was a participant of the Miami Heat team of the NBA during the period of 2012 and 2013 winners. This tall, dynamic and athletic champion is also popular for catching several million dollar agreements quite before the beginning of his profession with the Cleveland Cavaliers team of the NBA. He was also participant of the US men’s Olympic teams that have achieved a bronze in 2004 and a gold in 2008.
