The Channel Selection Method - Adobe Photoshop

Since I considered the color selection easy, you are probably cringing at the thought of other methods for a matte.

  1. Go back to GreenScreen.tga. Rather than just picking a color, the shorter method would have been saving a channel as a matte.
  2. Now prepare yourself: Click the Channels tab.
  3. Does the green channellook familiar? The GATE(Gifted and Talented Education) students probably noticed in the color selection section that the resulting alpha channel looks very similar to the green channel. Without doing much, you can just create an alpha channel by duplicating the green channel.

  4. Click the green channel and go to the Channel submenu. Choose Duplicate Channel and name the channel in the Duplicate Channel dialog box that comes up. See Figure below.
  5. A duplicate of the green channel may give you a head start.

You could also just drag the channel to the new layer icon at the bottom of the channel layer palette.

  6. Go to Image > Adjustments > Threshold, shown in Figure below
  7. Image > Adjustments > Threshold takes you where you want to go.

  8. Slide the triangle under the histogram all the way to the right, as you see in Figure below.
  9. Slide the triangle to the right, as far as it will go.

The white areas remain white and the post’s dark, grayscale image blacks out. If there are any speckles of white within the black, just paint them out with a paintbrush. That’s it. Really. Figure below proves it.

Take a look at your finished work.

Most of the time an image needs more matted than just a solid, clean color. Even in this ideal case, you had to go in with a brush and paint out little areas.
