What are the basic controls are used in flex?

Each user interface considers below mentioned 3 main aspects:

  • UI elements: UI elements are the core visual elements which are seen by the user eventually and interact with. Flex offers a list of majorly used and common elements changing from basic to complex.
  • Layouts: Layouts define the way of organizing UI elements on the screen and provide a final look and feel to the GUI (Graphical User Interface).
  • Behaviour: Behaviour events occur when the user interacts with UI elements.

Flex UI Elements:

Flex UI library provides classes in a well-defined class hierarchy for creating complex web-based user interfaces. All classes in this component hierarchy will be derived from the EventDispatcher base class as shown below:

Each Basic UI control will inherit properties from UIComponent class which in turn inherits properties from EventDispatcher and other top level classes.

Flex EventDispatcher Class

EventDispatcher class is the base class for all classes which dispatch events and lets any object on the display list to be an event target for using the methods of the IEventDispatcher interface.


Flex UIComponent

UIComponent class is the base class for all visual components, both interactive and noninteractive.

Controls & Description



Label is a low-level UIComponent which renders one or more lines of uniformly-formatted text.



Text control allows displaying HTML content and normal text also in the application.



Image control allows to import JPEG, PNG, GIF, and SWF files at runtime.



LinkButton control is a borderless Button control whose contents are highlighted when a user moves the mouse over it.
