Whistle blowing is a term used by an employee to raise issues about the illegal practices and procedures in the place where they are working. The term is legally known as public interest disclosure and person who raises the issues is called a whistle blower. This is specially raised when something is going wrong whether it may happen intentionally or unknowingly. This helps the employees to raise issues in a way that will not be disloyal to their colleagues and their settings. Any employee, contractor or a paid or unpaid can use this whistle blowing to raise issues. Whistle blowing policy will give an opportunity to the employees to deal the issues internally. Whistle blowing can be done by the employees for many reasons. Reasons for whistle blowing can include misconduct, breech of the statutory requirements or anything that affects the running of the setting including allegations of harm or abuse.
Scope of this policy may include: Potential violation of the law or misuse of justice.Acts that cause damage to the environment .Fraud, corruption and the misuse of public funds. Harmful effect on health and safety of the employees . Financial misuse or malpractices.Illegal or criminal activities at the work place. Harassment or bullying by coworkers in the work place etc. Any person, who has a problem against the policies and practices that have been running around, can report it to the authorities who are responsible for handling this. There will be a separate team to handle these issues and they will solve it internally without disclosing the matter to others. Person who raised the issue will be given first preference and will also be given an opportunity to discuss if they have any further more issues. Government has passed a legislation to protect the rights of whistle blowers so as to encourage the exposure of illegal and fraudulent activities in corporate world. Many of them do not encourage this whistle blowing because this will affect their office environment very badly. One more reason is that the claims raised by whistle blowers may not always be genuine and they may be doing this intentionally to gain some attraction. So, sometimes people unnecessarily get dragged in to it and this may disturb the whole office environment. Whistle blowing against happening of illegal practices is good but one has to be very careful before raising an issue and should be prepared for the consequences.
