Reference check and background screening both are same. But reference check is part of Background Screening. Background Screening is a broad sense which involves a series of checks on an individual to make sure that the candidate going to be hired has a clear, non-toxic background. Background check includes various checks such as Education Checks, Employment checks, Professional Qualification / Certification checks, ID Checks, Address Checks, Credit Checks, Criminal Record Checks etc. Background screening is a very time taking process and companies prefer to hire a third party to conduct this verification process.
Recruiters says that backgroundverification may include telephone reference verification across 4 states with cross section of different levels of human resources with their valid inputs.
These processes include lot of psychological and external factors. There are many interferences are including in this process. Background checking is a core domain of HR department in the selection process. It is also believed that a reference check is a short cut to the back ground checking. Background checks not only asking questions and listening but it also involves checking the integrity of the inputs stated in the resume of the candidate.
The essence of background checking has grown after seeing the varieties of offences, civil suites, fraud, misappropriation of cash, credit card fraud involving/originated by the candidates. So, it is mandatory to check the all aspects by background investigators or consultants to verify the genuenity of the candidates.
On the other way, referral check is a verification method in which we can check something from an employee's current friends and known persons about his behaviour, his likes/dislikes etc. While background verification includes a wide range of activities. In which we investigate about someone's behaviour in past time. This can be done by private investigators as well as recruiters also.
