Competency mapping is a process in which an employer maps out or discovers the employee's skills and competent behavior which are critical for success in the work role. Competency is the characteristics required to perform work or task successfully and competency mapping is a process of identifying certain characteristics set of skills required for performing the job accurately at a given point in time. competency mapping will provide a list member that is eligible for the work with the required skill sets and who are critical for the given task and activities. Competency of company employees discovered through three processes they are
● Competency map: in this process, the list of individuals who are competent i.e. crucial for the job and good performers are listed out.
● Competency mapping: in this process from the list the employer will observe and identify the competencies crucial for success in the workplace
● Competency profiling: in this process recruiting the eligible competent employee for the specific job with the particular required skill set.
Competency mapping is done in achieving objectives to identify the competent employee some of the following functions are considered and identified in the mapping process
● leadership development
● competency for future planning
● work role clarity
● gap analysis
generally, the competency mapping is done on the basis on certain factors such as how the performance is and quality of the work and longer time frame that the employee is with the organization, behavioral change, and development orientation are take into account competency mapping is more of a observation of competent employee in the perspective of employer.

● Leadership qualities and awareness
Competency mapping can distinguish superior performer from average performer it is through identification of central /invisible competency and visible/surface competency in the employee. Establishment shows interest in management and appraisal of competence for future goal planning so in the competency mapping establishment appraises and rewards the employee with competent behavior and performance work done by the employee in the previous year on basis of characteristics mentioned above.
