India is among the top 5 nations in terms of flexi worker base. While, Indias Flexi workforce is currently at 1.3 Million and is expected to grow to 9 Million by 2025. Over 82% of total Flexi workforce in India is under the age of 30. Sectors including Retail, Telecom, and Manufacturing, Pharma, Hospitality and Agriculture sectors are increasingly going flexi. Nearly 27% of Indians joined the flexi workforce due to lack of any alternative opportunity in the formal sector. Most flexi jobs in India happen at the lower end of the skill such as, data operations, accounts, sales, back end operations, administration and marketing.
India is expected to employ 2.9 million flexi staff by 2018, thereby becoming the third largest country to employ contract employees globally, says a report by Indian Staffing Federation (ISF), an apex body of flexi staffing industry. With a growth rate of 12.3 per cent over 2015-18, flexi- staffing is becoming the job creation engine where over 9 million youth would be added to the organized workforce in the next 20 years, the flexi staff workforce at present in the country has increased to 2.1 million from 1.7 million in 2015.
Indian staffing industry size: Organized flexi staffing players have made significant contribution towards social security as well as government revenues in the last few years. With a growth rate of 12.3 per cent over 2015-18, flexi- staffing is becoming the job creation engine where over 9 million youth would be added to the organized workforce in the next 20 years. About 41% of women are getting back with flexible working options compared to 16-22% in smaller cities. The specific job segments that are flexi-friendly include software application development, content curation and online teaching. Companies need flexibility to remain competitive, and in the absence of the right environment that supports flexibility, work tends to go casual thereby denying the employee a secure job. As the economy evolves, companies mature and as companies go through different economic cycles they need this flexibility to help them augment their workforce. And that holds immense potential in India. India is expected to employ 2.9 million flexi staff by 2018, thereby becoming the third largest country to employ contract employees globally. Though there are multiple challenges, the road ahead for flexi staffing points to a growth oriented path powered by technology, simpler regulation, effective compliance, and innovation in making temp staff effective for business.
