Sustainability or green engineers have multiple disciplines like mechanical, electrical, environmental, civil, or structural. Green engineers work towards reduce the use of non-renewable resources and minimize an organizations environmental impact. The rise in concern for environment issues has been creating more jobs for sustainability engineers over the past few years. Top level professionals believe that sustainable business practices will increase productivity, reduce costs, and boost energy efficiency. There is a considerable difference between the profile of an engineer and green engineer. Many public and private companies are hiring sustainability engineers and offering IT jobs.


- Green engineer job responsibilities differ organization to organization. One sustainability engineer may work at office and other may need to work at industrial environment, while yet another may spend the majority of their time outdoors. While a sustainability engineer might work on cooling large industrial buildings with rooftop gardens, making sure all the air conditioners in an office meet regulations. Someone may work in hazardous-waste management needs and someone working exclusively on a residential electric grid. Environment jobs offer a typical green engineer job requirement include developing energy-efficient models, keeping abreast of new technologies, ensuring that any sustainability plan is followed, and crafting short- and long-term goals. They also work on developing programs and helping promote more energy-efficient habits.

- Recent survey found that engineering department collects and extrapolates much of its data from utility management software EnergyCAP, it also relies on a variety of other software tools. Experts say sustainability engineering saves energy and money with a high success rate. Having a MBA degree along with an engineering degree and certifications with Association of Energy Engineers, a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) will be an added value to pursue career as a green engineer. Having experience in the areas of gas engineering and construction, energy accounting and billing, and electric policy, rates and regulations may kick your job search.
