Google and Facebook trying to reach Non-English speaking users

World's largest social networking site Facebook and world's largest online search and advertising firm Google Inc are planning to reach the unreached people and focus their attention on rural areas and non English speaking users. They are considering it as bridging the gap or digital divide and engage many rural Indians to internet services and sell more online advertising space on the web and to millions of those Indians with mobiles. Facebook CEO stated that they have targeted the 9 million people who have not been reached the internet and they'll make internet accessible to the India's non-English speaking population through the Indian Language Internet Alliance (ILIA). It has been partnered with different media publishing houses like ABP News, NDTV, Network18, Jagran Prakashan Ltd and the government-run Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). When there is a fall down in the percentage of English language internet users then definitely looking for an alternative to looking for Indian languages such as Hindi to tap into what is expected to be the next wave of online subscribers, targeting 500 million Indians by 2017, compared to an estimated 200 million users currently.

- A recent report says that nearly 198 million of English speaking population is already using internet and remaining people are not skillful to use internet and partnering with some companies to making accessible of internet to all. There is estimation that there were only 22,000 wikipedia pages that were in Hindiwhile Estonia with a population of just 1.3 million had 44,000 Wikipedia pages in its native language Estonian. To encourage the other language users Google designed a web site named hindiweb.com for the users of Hindi speaking users with voice based commands in Hindi.

- This is a very important initiative. It is not a government initiative; it's an initiative which has come from the industry itself. This is how things build up, things happen, that's how the cable revolution happened in our country. And that is what will happen to this Indian language Internet Alliance, says minister for information and broadcasting.
